Pontardawe Golf Club Championships 2014

Saturday 2nd of August 2014 22:34
Steffan Rowe Pontardawe Club Champion 2014
The club championships are the highlight of every golf clubs competition calendar. This year was no exception, with all eligible club golfers aspiring to become club champion and see their name on the prestigious club championship winners board in the clubhouse.

This course was presented in superb condition by Jamie Probert and his ground staff with some fair but tough pin positions, exactly as you would expect for the club championships. There was nothing but praise for the course from the entrants, again confirming Pontardawe Golf Club as one of the top courses in South Wales.

The weather was very kind on the Saturday for the first round, with a tremendous turn out of golfers and all tee off times fully booked and the standard of golf being extremely high, with some very good scores being posted by many players.

Steffan Rowe took the lead in the gross competition with a score of 71 giving him a 4 shot lead over Chris Edwards and Daniel Jones, whilst Colin Bunyan posted a nett score of 65 to lead the salver competition by 2 shots from Daniel Butt.

The field was cut to 30 golfers to play in the second round on Sunday, with a lot of golfers in positions to move up the leader board and possibly win the converted title. The weather on the Sunday was again warm and sunny, with the breeze picking up during the afternoon to play a part in proceedings. There was a terrific atmosphere around the club with the competition being well supported with large crowds watching the top matches. Some of our junior members caddied for players, no doubt picking up some tips along the way.

The salver ended up being a two horse race with Edward Morgan coming out on top by way of an count back over Steve Elliott, both players scoring a commendable 138 nett over the two days. Congratulations to Edward in winning the salver by posting nett 69 on both days for his 138 total.

The gross competition was a very close nail biting affair, fought out by Steffan Rowe, Chris Edwards an Daniel Jones. All players three players felt the pressure and a few shots were dropped during the round.

The much converted title of Pontardawe Club Champion 2014 was eventually won by Steffan Rowe who chipped in on the 18th green in front of a large crowd in front of the clubhouse, to post a gross score of 148 and win by four shots from runner up Daniel Jones

Well done to all who made the cut and played on the second day.

A big congratulations to Steffan, a very popular winner who will go on to represent Pontardawe Golf Club in the Champions of Champions.
