Dylan and Jac fly the flag for Pontardawe Golf Club

A big congratulations to "Jac Rogers" and "Dylan Thomas" who have both been selected for the Golfing Union of Wales South West Academy Squad. It's just reward for all the hard effort they have both put into their game this season, along with continual improvement in their golfing skill levels.

Dylan, coached by Baden Jones has been a member of the Welsh nursery squad for some time and qualified for nursery squad by trials and tests of his golfing skills last season. He has constantly improved his golfing skills, winning club competitions along with adding two hole in one's to his name this year. He has also given a very credible account of himself in Welsh and European competitions this year. As reward for his hard work and commitment to the game along with his continual improving skills he has been promoted from the nursery squad into the Golfing Union of Wales South West Academy Squad.

Jac's qualification to be part of the Golfing Union of Wales South West Academy Squad this year began after his golf coach Mark Govier suggested he put a golfing synopsis of his achievements to date together for him to be considered for the annual Welsh trials. Jac was very pleased to receive an invite to attend the trials held over two days at the Celtic Manor Golf Club on the 27th and 28th of September.

On the first day Saturday 27th, there were 43 entrants at the introductory presentation for the trials from throughout Wales, which would be halved after the first days assessment and trials, with some disappointed youngsters being sent home.

First day trials consisted of

  • ·Wedge skills test
  • ·Power lines putting competition
  • ·Power lines chipping competition
  • ·Video assessment

Jac was one of the fortunate ones that was invited back to the second day of the trials which consisted of a full competition round, where trialists were followed by the coaches and selectors. The pressure was very intense, but Jac managed to hold his nerve and put in a commendable performance. After that it was all down to the selectors and whether Jac had done enough to impress them.

It seemed like the wait for the squad announcement took forever but on the following Thursday, Jac received notification of his successful selection to the Golfing Union of Wales South West Academy Squad.

"It appears that thanks to the Junior Leader Anne Evans, supporting coaches and members, that Pontardawe Golf Club has got the junior set up just right and the club firmly believe that their junior section will continue to provide some very talented youngsters for the national squads. The main thing is the juniors are enjoying their golf and being part of the Pontardawe Golf Club junior set up, with quite a few of them already making names for themselves and becoming forces to be reckoned with in the golfing circles. The club has a lot of up and coming junior golfers who I am sure will follow in Jac and Dylan's footsteps. It's not very often a golf club can say they've got two junior golfers in the same Golfing Union of Wales South West Academy Squad "
