Club Captain Meirion Davies Congratulates Steffan Rowe 2015 Club Champion

The club championships are the highlight of every golf clubs competition calendar. Again this year was no exception, with all eligible club golfers aspiring to become club champion and see their name on the prestigious club championship winners board in the clubhouse.

This course was presented in superb condition by Jamie Probert and his ground staff with some fair but tough pin positions, exactly as you would expect for the club championships. There was nothing but praise for the course from the entrants, again confirming Pontardawe Golf Club as one of the top courses in South Wales.

The weather turned nasty during the first round on Saturday afternoon with heavy rain sweeping in. There was a tremendous turn out of golfers and all tee off times were fully booked. The standard of golf was extremely high with some very good scores being posted by many players.

In the first round, defending champion and scratch golfer Steffan Rowe took the lead in the gross competition, with a score of 69 giving him a 2 shot lead over Michael Jones playing off a handicap of 2. The net Competition for the Salver was closely fought on the Saturday with 12 year old Dylan Thomas playing of a handicap of 7 tying with Stephan Rowe, Michael Jones, Paul Morgan and Vince Griffiths all posting net scores of 69.

The field was cut to 27 golfers to play for the second round on Sunday, with a lot of golfers in positions to move up the leader board and possibly win the converted title. The weather on the Sunday was warm and sunny, with a breeze picking up in the afternoon. There was a terrific atmosphere around the club with the competition being well supported with crowds watching the top matches. Some of our junior members caddied for players, no doubt picking up some tips along the way.

The net salver competition again was a very close competition with young Dylan Thomas coming out on top posting a total 2 day net score of 143 playing off a handicap of 6. In second place was Jonathon Young with a very commendable 2 day net score of a 144.

The gross competition was a very close nail biting affair and the pressure told with a few shots being dropped by players. Steffan Rowe held his nerve and managed to win by 2 shots with a 2 day gross score of 148, Michael Jones finished runner up 2 shots behind with a 2 day gross score of 150. Most players felt the pressure during a very close fought contest.

Well done to all who made the cut and played on the second day.

The 2015 Club Captain Meirion Davies commended the ground staff for the fantastic course condition and set up set up. He then thanked all entrants for making the club championship a very tight, hard fought, memorable competition. And lastly he congratulated Steffan and Dylan for winning the respective competitions.

Congratulations to Dylan Thomas who won the net Salver competition, that's quite an achievement for a 12 year old playing off the white boxes and beating the field and winning the Salver.

A big congratulations to Steffan who successfully defended his 2014 club champion status becoming the 2015 club champion, a very popular winner who will go on to represent Pontardawe Golf Club in the Champions of Champions.
