What a day ! The "Junior Classic Open Day" at Pontardawe Golf Club.

Saturday 29th of August 2015 23:04

The fund raising day to support the junior section and promote golf to juniors in the local community was again extremely well supported, with 38 teams of 4 entering and enjoying a mainly cloudy day, albeit, with one or two torrential downpours., But that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the teams to score well. There was tremendous support from all the members with the Ladies section entering quite a few teams.

This year, Craig Davies and his wife Julie who started the event a few years ago to raise funds for the junior section took a back seat with the organising to allow Craig to settle into his retirement. The event was set up by Craig and Julie to provide funds to support the junior section throughout the year. Its aim was to provide golf lessons, coaching, equipment, competition prizes etc. for all ages and promote and introduce the game of golf to youngsters in the local community.

We have been informed that Craig will be playing a more prominent part again next year, that's great news for Pontardawe Golf Club as the event has become one of the highlights of the year.

The "Junior Classic Open Day 2015" was organised by Conrad Dyment-Jones who worked tirelessly to carry on the tradition of raising funds for the junior section by ensuring we had sponsors for the prizes, team entries for the competition along with the running and organising of the day. Conrad finished up by being the master of ceremonies for the presentations, raffles and auction. "You dare not cough or scratch your nose when Conrad's the auctioneer or you end up buying something". Conrad's hard work ensured the day was an outstanding financial success, as well as a fantastic day of golf and entertainment.

Pontardawe Golf Club has a very strong junior section and we are very grateful to Anne Evans the junior leader for all her hard work every week, with help from Jan Griffiths and all members, committee and coaches who assist with the running of the junior section. The juniors are the future of the club and the funds raised will be used wisely to continue strengthening that section, and introduce new juniors from the local community to golf. It's very difficult to thank Craig and Julie enough for starting this event in support of the juniors. This event is so popular we are already looking forward to next year's event.

The club captain Meirion Davies made the presentations assisted by Craig an Julie Davies.

Meirion closed proceedings by thanking all who played and entered teams in the event and all the sponsors for their prizes and auction items donated. Thanks were paid to Jamie Probert our head green keeper and his team for providing us with such a terrific course this year. The course was in immaculate condition, considering the weather, with some difficult pin positions keeping everybody thinking about their approach shots and putts. A big thank you to the bar staff Bradley and Collette and their team for keeping us well watered, and last but not least a huge thank you to our head chef Graham Hurren and his team for serving us with some mouth-watering meals.

The format of the day was Stableford Teams of 4, the best 2 scores on each hole counting, with all 4 scores being counted on the 18th

The prize table was second to none and there were prizes for the top 3 teams along with numerous other prizes followed by a raffle and an auction for prizes donated by our sponsors.
