2014 "The Winter League” is here again
After an outstanding summer of golf, with some of the best golfing weather for years, accompanied by the course being in absolutely, all time pristine playing condition, the time has come to get your winter golfing gear out, brave the elements and enjoy yourselves.
We have to congratulate our head green keeper Jamie Probert and his team for presenting us with the best course in South Wales throughout the Summer. Jamie has informed me that the growth is still very strong on the course and we're still playing summer golf, even though the temperature is just starting to drop, it is still well above average for October, fingers crossed it wont be too harsh a winter, but you never can tell. Unfortunately the calendar dictates we must start the winter league soon to get all the competitions in.
Last winter two of the past captains Conrad Jones and Alan Lewis worked tirelessly running the winter league competitions and making the presentations every weekend. The whole winter league set up was a complete success, with some members sorry to see it finish when the summer sun arrived.
The Saturday winter league competition was very well supported and the bar and lounge were both full on every Sunday competition. The bar takings were high throughout last winter with everybody having a great day and complementing on how well the winter league competitions were being run.
The entry numbers for the Saturday and Sunday competitions were the highest we have ever had, particularly in the Sunday competitions we saw averages of 130 members participating. The winter league was well supported by all sections, mens, ladies and junior members. There was a very strong entry from the ladies section, some of whom were successful in winning prizes.
On a Sunday there were raffles, along with nominal cash prizes which you could choose to gamble by picking one of two mystery prizes in sealed envelopes. Mystery prizes, ranged from a tin of beans, or a day filling in divots with our ground staff, to a golfing challenge the following Sunday to double your prize money, electric trolleys, wetsuits, putters, golf balls, right up to a villa abroad for a week.
Another popular part of the competition was "dope of the day” where competitors were nominated for something silly they had done on the day. We had quite a few contenders for this prize every week and again this proved to be a great source of entertainment which added to the enjoyment. Winners of this prestigious prize had to wear a bowler hat on the course the following week.
This winter again due to popular demand and at the request of the members it has been decided to run the Saturday and Sunday winter league competition in the same format as last year.
These are two totally separate winter league competitions Saturday and Sunday.
The first Saturday winter league competition is on Saturday 20th of October
The first Sunday winter league completion is on Sunday 28rd of October

"The majority of members can't wait for the fun to begin, if you didn't play in it last year you're missing out on a great day with terrific prizes and the added bonus of supporting the club in its quest to keep your fees as low as we can"
