Gentlemen's evenings at Pontardawe Golf Cub. How did it all start ?
A little bit of an insight into the history of the most popular event in the Potardawe Golf Club diary, how it all started and what celebrity guests have entertained us over the years
"The gentlemen's Evening "or as it was called back in the day "The Smokers Evening"started back in 1990 when Alun Evans was club captain. A couple of members suggested to the captain that it would be a good idea to organise a Smokers Evening at the golf club with a cue ritzy guest speaker.
It was quite a venture for the club to embark on and after much persuasion Alun eventually succumbed to the members requests and agreed to organise such an evening.
Taking into consideration this sort of event was new to the club, the big problem was, who could be invited as a guest speaker at the club that would excel at after dinner speaking on a subject that would entertain the members.
As the November date for the Smokers Evening got closer, things were beginning to look a little bit desperate, as there was no celebrity speaker booked and most avenues had been exhausted in the way of enquiries to find a suitable candidate.
Purely by fate, Alun was playing in the Glyneath golf club open day and approached Max Boyce to see if he would be interested in being the guest speaker at Pontardawe golf clubs first ever Smokers Evening. To Aluns great surprise Max readily agreed to be the guest speaker.Relief all round !
After that first Smokers Evening, the event was well and truly launched and has gone from strength to strength right up to the current year. The Gentlemen's Evening has now become one of the most popular events in the golf clubs yearly calendar, and rightly so.
