Free 12 Month Membership Competition & The Winter League Finals

Monday 24th of March 2014 13:34
February the 11th Fairway

The free membership competition was played over two days and the competitor with the best single stableford score over 18 holes was awarded a completely free membership for the 2104 season. The competition entry was fully subscribed and congratulations to Barrie Lewis (41pts) who triumphed above all to collect the fabulous prize

The winter league finals for the Saturday and Sunday competitions were also played last weekend.

By popular request, two separate winter league competitions were held this year on a Saturday and a Sunday over the last 24 weeks or so.

Considering the absolutely appalling weather we experienced this winter, the entry numbers were the highest in the club history, even with all the inclement weather, our hardy golfers braved the elements week in, week out to post some great scores.

Mal and Jan, our steward and stewardess kept everybody well fed with a never ending supply of piping hot food, to keep out the winter chill.

The top twenty highest scorers on each day were awarded points, then the top twelve highest accumulative points scorers over the winter period battled it out in a grand final for the Saturday and Sunday Trophies.

The presentation was carried out and substantial cash prizes and trophies were awarded to two popular winners, Michael R Jones (26pts) winning the Saturday Winter League Competition and Martyn Darrell (28pts) winning the Sunday Winter League Competition along with Eddie Morgan winning the club raffle for a free 2014 Membership.

The Sunday presentations were rounded off with a sensational acoustic duo called " The 2 Tones" who kept everybody entertained and singing along to a variety of songs to suit all tastes

There were three main reasons for success of the winter league and it's high entry numbers.

Firstly, was the time and effort put in by Conrad Dyment-Jones to organise the event every weekend, come rain or shine, "More rain than shine I might add", he made the whole weekend winter league competition a truly memorable experience with winners on a Sunday being allowed to collect a cash prize or gamble for a mystery prize. The mystery prizes ranged from ranged from a quality tin of beans, or a day filling in divots with our ground staff, to a golfing challenge the following Sunday to double your prize money. Electric trolleys, wetsuits, putters, golf balls, right up to a villa abroad for a week. Every week the prizes were duly presented by the 2013 Club Captain Alan Lewis.

Secondly, without any shadow of doubt was the work that our head green keeper Jamie Probert and his staff put in to keep the course playable in continually atrocious weather conditions. The course remained open and we played on our greens throughout the winter, with very few temporary greens, which is a testament to all the hard work Jamie and his team have carried out.

Thirdly, the main reason for the success of the winter league competitions was down to you the members, for supporting the competitions and turning out in droves every weekend in weather which has been the worst this country has seen for decades.

All that remains to be said is a massive thank you to all those involved in the Pontardawe Golf Club winter league competitions and making it such a huge succes.
